Iron Casting Analysis

Iron Casting AnalysisF
Sample for the classification of length and distribution of flake graphite and result visualisation.

Iron Casting Analysis F
Common solutions do not separate combined flakes. For example, the size of the blue flake in the image, is described by the circumference circle drawn around such an object.

Iron Casting Analysis F The classification with our intelligent method ‘skeletonizes’ the samples, delivering far more accurate results. Flakes that contact each other are separated fully. The Length is now properly determined by this true devolution.

Graphite structures in cast iron have an important impact on key parameters such as the refractive index and the coefficient of elasticity. For this reason it is important to analyze key features such as graphite size, form and distribution.

Opto has created several unique solutions in this area of material science. Due to the fact that every application is different, please contact us for special advice at info@solino.com to discuss a special offer for a solution tailored exactly to your needs.

The solutions shown here were created as standalone quality test systems to evaluate and measure to the standards EN ISO 945 and ASTM A 247.

Size Distribution of Graphite Flakes

All standards to evaluate the microstructure of Graphite Flakes, describe such features only by verbal recommendations. Only the ASTM A 247 standard gives a simplified criteria as to how the size of graphite flakes should be evaluated (‘serpentine length dimension of flakes or the diameter of nodules’).

Most commercially available software which attempts to perform graphite evaluation defines the size of such features only by the simple measurement of the diameter of a circle drawn around the flake feature.

Our unique software solution is able to provide a far more detailed set of information around such measurements, than those provided by simpler algorithms. The comparison images below clearly illustrate the difference.
